Our Commitment
As an ecumenical Christian housing ministry, Habitat for Humanity International has displayed an unwavering commitment to the elimination of poverty housing worldwide. Canyon County Habitat for Humanity was formed in 1995 as an affiliate of this international effort. Canyon County Habitat for Humanity has become a part of the solution by building simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with families in need. Our local affiliate has helped 8 families become homeowners, we have provided the opportunity for hundreds of local volunteers to help build a better community, and we have unfailingly promoted the principle of helping others who are less fortunate.
How Habitat Operates
Habitat does not build houses FOR families; rather, we build alongside those who demonstrate need and willingness to partner with Habitat. Partner families invest hundreds of hours of their own labor ("sweat equity") into the houses. Monthly mortgage payments (on a no-interest, no profit loan) go into a revolving Fund for Humanity to help with the construction of more houses. Through this approach, Habitat gives partner families a hand up, restoring the hope and dignity that hardship can strip away.
Habitat worksites are places to build relationships as well as homes. While Habitat was founded on biblical principals, Habitat's self-help solution to the blight of substandard housing is popular with people from many political, professional, ethnic and religious backgrounds.
Habitat for Humanity International
Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International has built and rehabilitated more than 200,000 houses with families in need.
